You often hear it said that, for the right-handed golfer, the key is strengthening and developing the left side of the body. This, again, is something I believe you can identify with very easily in Hogan’s swing. Through the ball the left side absorbs the ‘hit’, while the left arm can be seen to fold away beautifully, making way for the vital crossover as the right hand and forearm rotate over the left.

The left-arm drill you see illustrated here is a fantastic exercise that will help you to appreciate the correct sensation through and beyond impact, encouraging the left elbow to work closely to the body – i.e. folding as opposed to ‘chicken-winging’ away from the body. It is this action through the ball that gets the clubhead truly ‘releasing’, maximising the efficiency of your speed (Note: left-handers should train the right arm).

Work on this drill as often as you can: the better you are at this, the more efficiently your left arm rotates and the more the centrifugal forces that are created by your body ‘core’ will be channelled – and multiplied – via the arms and hands down into the clubhead. Good players understand this concept implicitly, and use it to their advantage – which is why they make solid ball striking look so easy. My hope is that this article will open your eyes to the importance of training the hand action, and that these exercises will set you on the road to a naturally correct swing. Remember, golf is not about power but about your ability to create speed. A good body action provides the framework, within which your hand action will flourish as your confidence grows.

Finally, a word about the finish. Most golfers fail to appreciate the importance of the complete ‘core’ movement to this tension-free, straight-up-anddown body position. Getting here is easy, as this drill illustrates (below). Standing with hands on hips, simply turn your hips to face the target, your weight flowing across into the left heel, right shoe pulling up on to the toe.
